Driving

Spain has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood - stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.8. New drivers are effectively forbidden to drink and drive, with a very low 0.1 mg/l limit.

Speed limits

  • Motorway: 120 Km/h
  • Open road: 90-100 Km/h
  • Town: 50 Km/h

You are permitted to drive with your normal licence at hand, provided it is written in the Roman Alphabet. Holders of licenses written in another alphabet are obliged to show an International Driving Permit in English (widely available through motoring organisations such as AA, AAA, RAC, etc.)

If you are planning to stay in the city only, you might NOT need to rent a car, however we strongly suggest to visit the nearby towns and attractions.

Trains

Renfe is the national train company in Spain. Most of your journeys between cities will be with Renfe. The trains vary from luxury long-distance trains with buffet cars and first and second class. Note that on some shorter journeys, prices can vary considerably if both long-distance and medium-distance trains serve your route, even though the journey time remains the same. Check online for the best prices and timetables.

The tram and trenet, a narrow gauge railway, connect to smaller towns along the coast, including Denia, Benidorm and Altea.
